Network Support Engineer

Apogee is the market leader in providing high-speed campus residential networks (ResNet) in partnership with higher education communities across the country. We provide a slew of IP enabled services via both wired and wireless local area networks (LAN/WLAN), such as high speed Internet access, IP video, and VoIP. In addition, we also provide CATV services at many of our client sites.

We are currently recruiting for a Network Support Engineer in Austin, TX. This person’s primary responsibility will be as a tier2/3 support engineer in fast paced operations environment with some occasional project engineering work.  This opening will require a solid background in Cisco technologies, and a customer service mindset.  This position will be supporting a diverse base of customers so someone who can work with non technical users, in a professional manor is highly desired. There is tremendous opportunity for some with the right skill sets and business acumen to excel within our organization.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Resolves simple to complex network outages and service interruptions with little supervision
  • Provides timely and accurate ticket updates to appropriate stake holders
  • Provides end to end network documentation
  • Must be able to work in a 24x7x365 on call environment
  • Follows MAC procedures and other department SOPs
  • Liaison between engineering group and client staff – both technical and non-technical personnel
  • Work closely with project management staff to meet project milestones
  • Develop and apply testing and troubleshooting plans
  • Manage and test ILEC/CLEC circuit cut-over and upgrades
  • May require performing onsite surveys for both wired and wireless access
  • Physical installation of core network components (racking and stacking), configure, turn-up and testing
  • Adds to the overall environment and teamwork of the group

Essential Requirements:  The following is not an all inclusive list of core requirements but a list of fundamentals necessary to satisfactorily perform in this position.

  • Complete understanding of escalation, incident management and change management processes and procedures of the NOC.
  • Familiarity with telephony, including Voice and Video over Network technologies (VoIP).
  • Expert level knowledge of Layer-2 and VLAN trunking
  • Strong experience with BGP and other routing protocols (Static, EIGRP and OSPF)
  • Strong experience and knowledge supporting Radius, DHCP, and DNS servers
  • Strong experience working in a Cisco and Juniper switching and routing environment
  • Experience supporting SIP and Asterisks servers
  • Strong customer facing skills and business etiquette
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and maintain fast paced milestones and deliverables

Education and Certifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering, IT, or related field
  • CCNA Certification or better
  • CCNA Voice Certification or better
  • A Wireless Certification (CWNA, Cisco, or Aruba)
  • Juniper certification(s) is a plus
  • ILEC/CLEC or MSO experience is a plus

Other Requirements:

  • May require travel up to 10%
  • Ability to work weekends and overtime as needed – per on-call rotation
