Ithaca College

“We were not equipped nor chartered to be an ISP. Turning that business over to Apogee was a good business decision for Ithaca College. It’s been a win-win situation for everybody.”

Introducing ResCore™

coffee cup Introducing ResCore™
A robust network core powered by the largest student network in the nation… all for the price of a cup of coffee.

You make decisions every day that determine the value you create for your campus. What if one of those decisions could produce tremendous value — for less than the price of this morning’s cup of coffee?

Essential services, zero capital investment, zero technology risk

ResCore™ is an essential set of managed services that allow you to provide exceptional network service and support, while saving time and capital for the areas where you need them the most.

24/7/365 Student Support
Our 24-hour Austin-based support center is locally managed and powered by an advanced VoIP system, providing detailed historical reporting, as well as real-time call volume monitoring. Apogee regularly incorporates student feedback and gives you instant visibility.
Move-In Support
When it comes to move-in, we know everybody could use a little support. During 2012 move-in, it took an average of nine seconds for students to reach a live, helpful network support representative. We work to make sure that every student gets connected on the day they arrive.
Full Regulatory Compliance
Apogee keeps you in full regulatory compliance with federal regulations governing DMCA, RIAA, FERPA and CALEA enforcement on your network.
Stable & Reliable Network Speeds
Apogee deploys an advanced and integrated management system to ensure that peak times don’t mean sluggish connections. With our core network in place, you know your residents will receive the bandwidth they need at any time of day.
On-Site Support Technician
As part of Apogee’s core network, we provide a on-site coordinator to work with students directly and offer hands-on support. Our local coordinator also attends regularly scheduled housing meetings to stay in tune with student needs.
Mobile Device Support (BYOD)
From smartphones and tablets to DVRs and gaming systems, we support the devices that students are bringing to campus.

As budgets begin to take shape this fall, now is the perfect time to assess how you can meet the network and technology needs of your residents and still focus on other priority areas across the entire campus.

For a no obligation phone consultation about your ResNet needs, send us a message and an Apogee representative will contact you at your earliest convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions about ResCore™

▶ How does ResCore integrate into our current network topology?

Apogee’s ResCore deployment is designed to be an add-on to the school’s current ResNet Network Topology. The ResCore network hardware includes a border router/LSN, a traffic shaper, a caching engine, a core switch/router, and a host of application servers.  The hardware footprint is approximately 1 half of a standard rack of equipment. Data interconnects will be made between Apogee’s border router and the school’s border routing device for Internet Connectivity ingress/egress, and between Apogee’s Core switch/router and the school’s core switch/router for distribution ingress/egress.  VLAN trunking will be utilized to receive the user traffic from the school’s wired and wireless distribution network at which point the logical topology will be injected by Apogee’s ResCore equipment including DHCP, AAA, per device rate-limiting, and NAT. User traffic will be Network Address Translated to an Apogee owned ARIN IP CIDR block that will be added to the routing of the existing Internet connection, thus allowing Apogee to provide the additional benefit of DMCA and CALEA management to the school. Apogee’s proprietary AAA management system works in conjunction with our Customer Support System to allow Apogee to provide a high level of service through our 24/7/365 Call Center, our customer support portal, onsite coordinator, and Trouble Ticketing System.

▶ How does ResCore help with insufficient bandwidth?

Apogee’s ResCore implementation includes a state of the art Carrier Class Traffic Shaper and a Caching Engine.  Through our core deployment we will shift the ResNet bandwidth allocation away from an Enterprise model to a per device SLA driven bandwidth model. While insufficient bandwidth will still be an issue for the ResNet, the building blocks will be in place to optimize the available bandwidth as much as possible under an ISP centric model for the short term, and help us identify how Apogee can partner with the school for future bandwidth increases to improve overall user satisfaction.

▶ What does ResCore provide per bed?

We understand that large projects can be complicated to navigate and take time to implement, so our main goal is to provide enhanced ResNet services immediately. This enhancement includes a core that allows for better bandwidth optimization, per user bandwidth, device support and authentication. We will also manage all RIAA/DMCA as well as maintain CALEA compliance. Students will have 24 hour support through Apogee’s call center as well as an onsite coordinator to assist with the network as well as onsite student support. In addition, based on our extensive ResNet deployments, we will work with IT and Housing to determine a customized solution that allows for scalability and growth.

▶ We need new hardware and wireless equipment immediately. Can you provide it now?

By utilizing your current infrastructure, we will and work with you to analyze and develop a customized technology roadmap that will allow the best efficiency in determining specific hardware and service needs for the school. This is why the demonstration project is critical – it allows students to experience state of the art services and allows the Administration, Housing and IT to see how these services can impact the campus.
