Fredericksburg, VA – March 10, 2009
Apogee, the leader in providing fully-managed ResNet solutions to higher education, announced today that it has partnered with the University of Mary Washington to provide integrated high-speed Internet, cable, IPTV and Voice over IP services to the school’s residential student network beginning in January 2009.
Under the agreement, UMW students will be able to choose from a variety of tiered Internet speeds with dedicated bandwidth for each resident. Students will also receive a hand-selected lineup of local, national and international programming along with live IPTV streamed directly to their desktop or laptop computers over the data network.
“An added benefit is that our students will be able to watch digital-quality and HD programming directly from the cable connection – without a set-top box,” said Carol Martin, Senior Project Specialist.
By avoiding the distribution, repair and replacement costs that accompany digital cable boxes and cable modems, UMW officials expect to see a significant impact on department budgets and staff time. The reduced equipment load on the university’s residential power system will drive further savings in monthly energy costs.
Apogee will also take responsibility for repairs and maintenance on all equipment related to the network and provide comprehensive 24-hour support to students in UMW residence halls. The transfer of day-to-day network operations will allow the school’s IT and Housing departments to devote more focus to core academic pursuits rather than functioning as a network service provider.
“The economy of scale was evident to UMW,” said Chuck Brady, Apogee CEO. “Because of our extensive background in integrated IP services, we’re able to provide an advanced network with extremely efficient processes in place. The value has always been there, but the benefit to schools has become increasingly more important in tight economic times.”

“We were not equipped nor chartered to be an ISP. Turning that business over to Apogee was a good business decision for Ithaca College. It’s been a win-win situation for everybody.”
